Wisdom Teeth Removal in Tempe

Find out whether your wisdom teeth actually need to come out. Start with a free consult and panoramic X-ray, and leave with a written quote before you commit to anything.

Wisdom teeth usually show up in the late teens or early twenties, often in the middle of school or a busy job. At 3rd Set Smiles in Tempe, Dr. Matthew Phillips checks whether yours need to come out at all and, if they do, removes them in-house, from simple extractions to impacted teeth.

Signs it's time for a look

  • Aching or pressure at the very back of your jaw
  • Swollen, red, or tender gum behind your last molar
  • A bad taste or odor that keeps coming back from one spot
  • Trouble fully opening your mouth, or pain when you chew
  • Crowding or pressure against the neighboring molar

Significant swelling, fever, or trouble swallowing is not a wait-and-see situation. Call us, and see our emergency dentistry page.

Your visit, step by step

  • Free consult and panoramic X-ray. We look at the roots, the nerve, and how much room each tooth has, then tell you plainly whether removal makes sense.
  • A written quote. You leave knowing the price and the plan before you commit to anything.
  • Removal. Teeth that have come in fully can often be removed simply. Impacted or partially erupted teeth need a surgical approach: a small incision and sometimes sectioning the tooth. Read more in simple vs. surgical extractions.
  • Recovery and follow-up. You go home with clear after-care instructions.

Comfort and sedation

Most wisdom teeth can be removed with local anesthetic alone. If you're anxious or having several teeth out at once, ask about our sedation options. We'll talk through what fits your health history and how you'll get home afterward.

Recovery

The first 24 hours matter most. Protect the blood clot in each socket: skip straws, spitting, and smoking, eat soft cool foods, and use cold compresses for swelling. Most people feel close to normal within two to three days. Our guide to preventing dry socket explains what to watch for.

Cost, students, and insurance

Simple wisdom tooth extractions start at $149 per tooth. Surgical or impacted teeth, multiple teeth, and sedation are quoted at your consultation. Students save 15% on treatment with a valid ID, and our office on Southern Avenue is a short drive from ASU and Mesa Community College. Wisdom Teeth Removal FAQ

Not always. Many people keep their wisdom teeth with no trouble. Removal makes sense when a tooth is impacted, crowding its neighbor, partially erupted and trapping food, decaying, or causing repeat infections. A panoramic X-ray shows which applies to you.
